Adding Style to Your Page

Formatting/Style Tags in Action!

Want to emphasize or bold a particular word?

Formatting or adding style is similar to how this function is handled in word-processing applications.

There are two types of formatting codes:

PHYSICAL

  • add emphasis by specifying exactly how the text should display (i.e., look)

LOGICAL

  • add emphasis without specifying how the text should display (i.e., look)
  • specifies instead how text should be handled -- lets the browser define the appearance
  • offers more flexibility

Future versions of HTML may not "support" (display) physical formats.

TIPS:

  • Underlined text looks like a hyperlink so use sparingly. It is recommended to not use it at all.
  • Use the strike-through tag only when it has significance, such as in legal documents.
  • Use BIG or SMALL to change the size of a word or phrase in respect to the surrounding text. BUT not all browsers display BIG and SMALL the same way. Netscape formats BIG as one size larger, SMALL as one size smaller than the surrounding text. Internet Explorer formats BIG as size 4 and SMALL as size 2.
